Homosexuality in Arabic Literature

Homosexuality in Arabic Middle Eastern Literature

The expression of male homoerotic sentiment is one of the dominant themes in classical Arabic literature from the ninth century to the nineteenth.
In poetry, traditionally considered the supreme art among the Arabs, love lyrics by male poets about males were almost as popular as those about females, and in certain times and places even more popular. But in prose literature as well, including such varied genres as anecdotal collections, vignettes in rhymed prose known as maqamat, shadowplays, and explicit erotica, homoerotic themes, mostly male but also female, are anything but rare.Even though homosexual behavior is condemned in the strongest terms by Islamic law, a position reiterated by numerous legal and pietistic works devoted to the subject, homoerotic love generally appears in poetry and belles lettres as a phenomenon every bit as natural as heteroerotic love and subject to the same range of treatments, from humorous to passionate.
This striking affirmation of homosexuality does not, however, go back to the earliest period of Arabic literature. In the extant poetry from the sixth, seventh, and early eighth centuries-from a generation or two before the advent of Islam through its first century-there are virtually no references to homosexuality at all.
It was during this period that love poetry developed into an independent genre, or rather two, one playful and teasing, the other, known as udhri verse, passionate and even despairing; but both were initially uniformly heteroerotic.

AL HEJAZ THE LAND OF SACRED CITIES

HEJAZ THE GEM OFARABIA

We used to say in Egypt " He traveled to Al Hejaz " meaning that someone has traveled to Mecca to practice the ritual of pilgrimage ( Al Haj ) and to Medina to visit the Mosque of the Prophet Mohammed. But what do we know about Al Hejaz ?

Hejaz is on the shores of Red Sea incorporated with Nejd; bounded N. by Syria and Jordan, E. by Nfud desert and Nejd, S. by Tehama. Is almost all stony desert. After the participation of Turkey in the First World War this region was the scene of severe and prolonged fighting. It is well known that a number of western travelers across the ages visited Al Hejaz and depicted scenes from the two sacred cities Mecca and Medina. They were disguised as Moslem pilgrims. The most famous character of them is " Laurence of Arabia ". Now the kingdom of Saudi Arabia allows people from everrywhere to visit and work in the kingdom except Mecca and Medina for those who are not Moslems.

HOW TO BE DUMB WITHOUT TOIL ?

How to be dumb without toil ?

This story is told of a young couple who had been sweethearts but had quarrelled. One day the former lover had to make a business call on the girl's father and, of course, it so happened that she answered the door. " I beg your pardon " said the young man, keeping his nerve in the trying circumstances remarkably well. " Miss Perkins, I think ? Is your father in ? " " No, he's not, I am sorry to say. Did you wish to see him personally ? " Asked the girl, without the slightest sign of recognition showing in her eyes. " Yes; but it will do tomorrow, Thank you. I will call again. Good afternoon ! " But this was too much. As he reached the bottom step the girl spoke : " Excuse me ! Who shall I say called ? "

HARA-KIRI ( SUICIDE OF THE SAMURAI )

HARA-KIRI IS A METHOD OF SUICIDE, OBLIGATORY OR VOLUNTARY, BY DISEMBOWELMENT, PRACTISED BY THE SAMURAI CLASS IN JAPAN; LATER ADOPTED BY ALL CLASSES AS IDEAL FORM OF SELF—DESTRUCTION. IT WAS DONE BY SELF-INFLICTED CUT ACROSS THE ABDOMEN WITH A DAGGER, FOLLOWED BY A SWORD STROKE BY ANOTHER HAND WHICH SEVERED THE HEAD FROM THE BODY. AS AN OBLIGATORY ACT, ABOLISHED IN 1868. ON THE DAY OF THE JAPANESE EMPEROR’S BURIAL ( 1912 ), GENERAL NOGI AND HIS WIFE COMMITED HARA-KIRI.. CAN YOU IMAGINE YOURSELF ASKING YOUR WIFE TO COMMIT SUICIDE TOGETHER TO SHOW YOUR GRIEF AND SORROW FOR THE DEATH OF YOUR PRESIDENT, KING OR PRINCE ?
